It's technically possible to study a PhD via distance learning. It's normally expected that you will be living and studying in New Zealand while enrolled for the degree.

You should discuss this with your potential supervisor and department at the start of your application process if you want to study via distance learning, and they will be required to submit a brief distance plan as part of your application which outlines how supervision will work.

If you obtain permission to study your PhD via distance learning and you are:

  • A New Zealand or Australian permanent resident, or
  • An Australian citizen, or
  • An international student.

You will be required to pay international fees if you are living and studying overseas.
