To reduce the risk of getting malware on your computer:

  • Install anti-virus software and run regular scans
  • If you are using a University computer, anti-virus software should be installed by your Desktop Support team
  • Regularly update your anti-virus
  • If you are using a University computer, this should happen automatically via ITS updates
  • Don't download pirated software, as it is more likely to contain malware
  • Use your common sense when surfing the internet and when downloading material from websites
  • Only plug in trusted USB drives to your computer
  • Don't click on links or attachments in spam email
  • Use a current web browser and consider using security add-ons (such as uBlock Origin, NoScript, or FlashBlock)
  • Take IT Training courses on computer security when available
