The Student/Staff Desktop is a virtual computer environment provided by the University of Otago that gives you access to the same software and files from your own computer, mobile, or laptop anywhere via the internet, and from any student computer on campus. Both the Student Desktop and the Staff Desktop utilise the same technology and have similar functionality, however the Staff Desktop is only available to staff on request:
The Student Desktop is accessible by logging in with your student username and password. A range of software is automatically included for every student, including Microsoft Office and EndNote (used for citing text in assignments), as well as up to 1 terabyte of storage space.
There are two ways to use the Student Desktop on your computer:
- Fully-featured—installing the Citrix Receiver/Workspace.
This is the recommended option and gives you the full experience of the Student Desktop. The Citrix Workspace app (formerly known as Citrix Receiver) allows the Student Desktop to access your files, your USB, network drives, or a connected printer, giving you the same working environment anywhere you need to work. You can use the full Student Desktop on your own laptop, desktop computer, or other device, and it can be used on both Mac and Windows computers:
- Light version—running the Student Desktop through your browser. This method gives you fewer options but no installation is necessary. This may be useful if you are using the Student Desktop on someone else’s computer or on a locked-down computer:
