Most University of Otago mobile phones and mobile data-enabled tablets have a plan with a generous mobile data allowance (quota). If you exceed your quota, you will be contacted by ITS to discuss your data requirements. You can track your mobile data usage by signing up at the Vodafone website to view your account details online:

Click My Vodafone > Register, then complete the online form Register for My Vodafone.

If you notice that your mobile data is being used up unusually quickly, this could be for one of the following reasons:

  1. Your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch could be automatically uploading data to iCloud. To resolve this, please see the related answer:
  2. Apps on your iPhone could be automatically connecting to the internet while running in the background. For more information, please see the related answer:
  3. Be aware that if your iPhone goes into deep sleep mode (inactive for two or more hours) when connected to a wireless network, it will automatically switch to using mobile data.
  4. When sending email with attachments from your phone or tablet, occasionally your message is not sent immediately and is queued for delivery in your Outbox. Your device will repeatedly attempt to send this email message until it is successful. An indication of this is if your phone or tablet becomes hot to the touch when not being used heavily. This is not usually a problem while you are connected to a wireless network (such as UO-STAFF) but when you leave the network and your phone or tablet automatically switches to using mobile data, significant costs can be incurred.
