It's technically possible to study a PhD via distance learning. It's normally expected that you will be living and studying in New Zealand while enrolled for the degree, and at least six months of study and research will need to be carried out at a campus of the University of Otago. Exceptions are rare and considered on a case-by-case basis.

You should discuss this with your potential supervisor and department at the start of your application process if you want to study via distance learning.

If you obtain permission to study your PhD via distance learning and you are:

  • an international student
  • an Australian citizen, or
  • a New Zealand or Australian permanent resident

living and studying overseas, you will be required to pay international fees.
