The University of Otago has a CCTV policy and procedures in place to make sure that the cameras are being operated in accordance with the Privacy Act 1993:
- The cameras have a clear purpose: to make the student areas safer by reducing and deterring criminal behaviour and helping to identify and prosecute offenders
- Camera footage can't be used to address non-criminal student behaviour under the Code of Student Conduct
- Signage advises that cameras are operating in the area
- Software within the cameras blacks out private areas, such as windows and doors, to protect the privacy of residents
- The University’s Registrar is also the Privacy Officer and is responsible for making sure your privacy is not being breached and the Privacy Act 1993 is being followed
