We recommend that you use .mp3 for audio, and .mp4 for video when preparing your files for your Otago Podcasts site.

These file types can be opened by a wide range of software (Windows Media Player, iTunes, Quicktime, etc.) commonly available on most personal computers. If you use .mp4 for video podcasts, your viewers will need Quicktime or VLC.

  • iTunes, commonly used to subscribe to podcasts, will only download podcast episodes that contain .mp3, .mp4 or .pdf files. If you are planning on uploading anything else, you will need to let your viewers know that iTunes is not recommended for use with your site
  • If you use formats such as .wma (audio) and .wmv (video), viewers will need Windows Media Player
  • The software for playing .mp3, .mp4, .wma, .wmv, and .aac files is installed on the managed student desktop
