The following smartphones and mobile devices can use eduroam:

  • Android
  • Blackberry
  • iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch (iOS version two or later)
  • Windows Mobile
  • Some Nokia smartphones (N95, N97, N770, N800 and N810)

eduroam has "cross platform" access, which means that eduroam will work on the following computer operating systems:

  • Windows (including Windows CE)
  • Mac OS
  • Linux

Visiting the University of Otago

If you are a student from another institution visiting the University of Otago, your home institution may not allow you access to eduroam from another location. Please contact the IT services at your home institution to find out more about this.

If you should have access to eduroam, but the eduroam option does not appear in your wireless connections, first check that:

  • there are other wireless networks available (there could be a local network problem)
  • your mobile device is in range for the University of Otago wireless network. eduroam is available at all locations covered by the University of Otago wireless network

eduroam is subject to the University of Otago’s Internet Usage Policy, which limits or denies access to certain websites. Please see the related answer for more information:

Your home institution can also control which websites you are allowed to visit when using eduroam at the University of Otago. Please contact the IT services at your home institution if you have any questions about this.

University of Otago staff and students are unable to access the eduroam service while on University of Otago campuses. You will need to use either the UO-STAFF, UO-STUDENT, or UO_WIFI networks instead.

Visiting other institutions

If the institution you are visiting is a participating member of eduroam, you will be able to access eduroam by using your University of Otago username (in the format username@otago.ac.nz) and password. For example: bonja00p@otago.ac.nz (staff) or bonja007@otago.ac.nz (student/external).

If you are a staff member or student from the University of Otago visiting an eduroam-providing institution but the eduroam option does not appear in your wireless connections:

  • check that there are other wireless networks available (there could be a local network problem or you may not be in range of the institution’s wireless network)
  • contact the IT services at the institution you are visiting to make sure there are no local issues that might affect your eduroam connection
