eduroam (education roaming) is a free secure wireless network available at participating campuses and institutions in New Zealand and around the world. The service is provided by an international federation of academic institutions for all members of the worldwide research and education community:

The University of Otago is a participating member of eduroam. This means:

  • if you're a visitor to the University of Otago from another eduroam-participating institution, you can use eduroam for secure wireless network access using your authentication credentials from your home institution
  • if you're a University of Otago staff member or student, you can use your University username (in the format username@otago.ac.nz) and password to access the internet and other University of Otago IT resources using the eduroam network while visiting other eduroam-participating institutions

eduroam will show up as a network option in your wireless connections on your mobile device or laptop.

How eduroam works

When you log into an eduroam-participating organisations's eduroam wireless network, eduroam sends your home institution's username and password details through a secure "tunnel" back to your home institution to be checked. Once your credentials have been verified by your home institution, that information is returned to the organisation you are visiting and you are allowed access to the eduroam wireless network.

For example, if you were visiting the University of Auckland, you would log in to their eduroam wireless network using your University of Otago username (in the format username@otago.ac.nz) and password. This information is sent to the University of Otago's identity management system and verified, and a message sent back to the University of Auckland advising that your credentials are correct. You are then allowed to access their eduroam service.

eduroam has secure encryption and authentication standards with better security than most commercial public wireless hotspots.

However, you should be aware that when using the internet via eduroam at another institution, any local security measures at that institution will apply to you as well. For example, the firewall settings at the visited institution may be different from those you are used to at your home institution, so as a visitor you may have access to fewer services on the internet than you would have at home.
