The New Frontiers Scholarship was established by the University of Otago in 2015 to recognise academic excellence in secondary school study, and is for students who don't have another University of Otago Entrance Scholarship (except the Dux Scholarship).

These scholarships are valued at $2,500 and $5,000, and are guaranteed to those who secure an Excellence endorsement at NCEA Level Two and/or Three (or equivalent) and are enrolling for one of the following degrees: bachelors' degrees in Applied Science, Arts, Commerce, Law, Music, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Radiation Therapy, Science, Social Work, Surveying and Teaching.

Applications are open to:

  • New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
  • International or domestic students who have completed year 12, and have completed or are in the process of completing year 13, at a New Zealand secondary school.

International or domestic students who have completed a Foundation Year at a New Zealand institution may be invited to apply for a New Frontiers Scholarship.

International students who have completed an internationally recognised qualification at an overseas high school such as A Levels, International Baccalaureate, or ATAR, AND have achieved excellent grades may also be invited to apply for a New Frontiers Scholarship but only after enrolling at the University of Otago.

This scholarship is not available to students enrolling for Health Sciences First Year or for the intermediate year of professional degrees not offered at the University of Otago (e.g. engineering).
