Personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn to minimise exposure to a hazard or risk. While the use of PPE provides some protection against exposure to a hazard or risk, it is only to be used when other methods of hazard control are not practicable (such as elimination or isolation).

Protective equipment that you may have to use includes:

  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection
  • Safety footwear
  • Hard hats
  • Gloves
  • Masks and respirators.

Training must be provided to ensure the correct fit and use of personal protective equipment. Contact the Health and Safety team on 03 479 4903 or email hsa@otago.ac.nz
