You should ask the referee to share their impression of the candidate's knowledge, skills and experience; the quality of their work; and any other attributes that affect their ability to work effectively, such as how they work with other people.
You should also ask the referee to confirm their relationship with the candidate, and, if applicable, to confirm details of the relevant period of employment as stated on the candidate's CV.
Template reference requests are available on the Checking references page or from the recruitment team. These templates can be edited as appropriate for the position and the referee. Where a personal referee is provided, you may need to adapt the reference request.
