An IRD number is the tax identification number that you use for your tax-related activities with New Zealand. You can apply for your IRD number online but you will need to have your identification documents verified in person. If you are coming to New Zealand you can apply for an IRD number when you arrive:

Apply for an IRD number—new arrival to New Zealand

You must have two original identification documents (such as a birth certificate or driver's licence). You will need to scan these and upload them with your application, then take the original documents to the Inland Revenue-appointed verifier, the Automobile Association (AA):

AA Driver Licensing Agents
AA—Individual IRD number applications

Once staff at the agency have verified your supporting documentation, they will return the originals to you and forward photocopies to Inland Revenue.

Inland Revenue will send you your IRD number within eight to ten working days. It is sent to your residential address, or, if it is urgent, Inland Revenue can advise you of the number by phone.
