Examples of a valid fixed term agreement are to:
- meet new project work of a defined period (a completely new event)
- cover for an absent staff member
- cover a workload peak.
For example, teaching STAT 101 because you are unsure of student numbers is an invalid reason because teaching STAT 101 is normal business that occurs each year and the uncertainty of demand for the subject is a normal business risk. If you are teaching STAT 202 because you're covering for a staff member on parental leave, that is a valid reason.
Refer to the Employment Relations Act 2000 (section 66) to gain an understanding of fixed-term reasons.
